Creative vs. Algorithms

A few years ago, the marketing world was asking whether or not AI would transform everything. In 2026, I believe we have our answer. It has. But maybe not in the way everyone expected.

Algorithms now decide which ads get shown, when emails land in inboxes, what content appears in feeds, and how media budgets shift in real time. AI can generate headlines, resize creative assets, build audience segments, and optimize campaigns faster than any team of people ever could. So naturally, as marketers, we’re asking a new question: Who’s really driving results now—the creative work or the algorithm? The answer isn’t either/or. It’s both.

The Algorithm is Powerful.
But it has a Problem.

Algorithms are incredible at finding patterns. They can identify audiences, optimize bids, analyze behavior, and process more data in a minute than most marketing teams could review in a month. But algorithms don’t understand human emotion, and they certainly don’t make someone care. That’s still a creative challenge.

Better Targeting Doesn't Fix Boring Marketing

One of the biggest misconceptions in modern marketing is that improved targeting automatically improves performance. It doesn’t. You can put a mediocre message in front of exactly the right audience at exactly the right moment, and still get mediocre results. Some brands invest heavily in AI-powered media buying, for example, only to discover that their real issue wasn’t distribution; it was differentiation. The technology worked, but the message didn’t.

Consumers still respond to ideas that entertain, inspire, educate, surprise, or solve a problem. No amount of automation can compensate for creative that fails to connect.

Creativity has Become More Valuable—
Not Less.

Ironically, as machine-generated content becomes more common, genuinely creative thinking becomes even more important. When everyone can generate a decent headline, image, or social post in seconds, “decent” stops being a competitive advantage, and originality becomes the differentiator.

Today’s successful brands aren’t necessarily creating more content. They’re creating more distinctive content. While the algorithms at play may determine who sees that content, it’s the messages themselves that determine whether anyone actually remembers them.

So, What’s Actually Driving Results?

If you’re looking for a winner in the creative-versus-algorithm debate, you’re thinking about this in the wrong way. Algorithms help brands target the right audience. Strong creative work gives the audience a reason to pay attention. One without the other rarely produces exceptional results.

In my opinion, companies that combine intelligent technology with compelling creative will continue to outperform those that rely too heavily on either. Going forward, I think you’ll find that the most successful marketing teams won’t be the ones fighting AI. They’ll be the ones using it. They’ll be automating recurring tasks, accelerating workflows, uncovering insights faster, and improving campaign efficiency in real-time.

At the same time, they’ll be investing heavily in the things technology still can’t replicate, like brand strategy, human insight, storytelling, and emotional connection. Those are the elements that move people. And people still make buying decisions.

Ready to Balance Technology and Creativity?

The marketing landscape will continue to evolve. New AI tools will emerge, algorithms will get smarter, and automation will become even more sophisticated. But one thing won’t change: people will still connect with great ideas.
